Batman backlash grows as Ben Affleck panned by film fans

Holy backlash, Batman! The choice of Oscar-winner Ben Affleck to play the Caped Crusader in the forthcoming 'Man of Steel' sequel has outraged many fans of the superhero.

Warner Bros has selected the 41-year-old star as the successor to rugged Welsh-born Christian Bale to play the Dark Knight opposite Henry Cavill, the young British actor in the role of Superman.
But social media has been fired up with criticism from Batman aficionados who mock the bearded actor as too old, stale, hirsute and anodyne for the role.
Tens of thousands signed online petitions urging the Hollywood studio to rethink its decision. Some even took their campaign to the "We the People" section of the White House website to urge the Obama administration to "denounce" the casting, but their petition was later removed by officials who said it breached their rules.
The most remorseless derision was channelled through the Twitter, where the hashtag "better Batman than Ben Affleck" was soon trending.
"The drunken hobo that lives under the overpass would be a #betterBatmanthanBenAffleck," wrote one user of the site, where more than 70 per cent of tweets were opposed to the choice, according to tracking firms.
